"Chemical" panic of the Kremlin

In early November, Russia once again rejected the US official proposal not to block the US draft resolution of the UN Security Council on Syria.

The resolution proposed a separate line of sanctions, as well as the punishment of the Syrian regime for the use of chemical weapons of mass destruction (WMD). But the Russian-American compromise on this big problem has not yet taken place.

Instead, Moscow decided to warm up the dispute further. Russian side requires “the establishment of commissions to check the results of past commissions” on Syrian chemical weapons.

For such a line of Russian policy in Syria, the desire of Russian strategists to fill time is evident. But in this case, it plays against Russian interests. The key repertoire of this scenario of delaying the WMD problem in Syria is the desire of the Russian Federation to “find out” at least some involvement of anyone from the Syrian opposition who will be responsible for this.

Of course, the “Islamic Caliphate” is also suitable, but it is better that it will be the pro-Western opposition to Bashar Assad from the Syrian Free Army. But to find evidence of involvement in WMD of these forces is quite difficult.

For example, in April 2017, Russia, while acknowledging the bombing of the Khan Sheikhun settlement in the province of Idlib, claimed that chemical munitions had not been used. A cloud of deadly gas, probably sarin, appeared after the bomb fell into a warehouse with chemical weapons belonging to an armed opposition group, which was supplied to Iraq. As a result of this war crime, more than 70 people were killed, including children and women.

And in the end, Russia has the worst option – to make someone guilty of spreading the technology of chemical weapons for Syria.

Moscow is looking for “a scapegoat”

The range of choice in this case for the Russian Federation has significantly narrowed.

For example, it could be Iran, which supplied Syria by various short-range unguided rocket projectiles.

Or, Moscow will have to leak all information about DPRK. North Korea took an active part in equipping Syria by operational and tactical missile systems of chemical weapons.

According to the available information in the international media, these two Russian proxies are exactly related to Syrian delivery vehicles for WMD. But they don’t have anything to relate with the development of chemical weapons.

For example, there is enough evidence In the European media that the DPRK supplied Syria with almost the entire range of operational-tactical missiles Scud with a range of more than 300 km, and a warheads weighing up to 1 ton. These missiles are most effective in delivering a massive chemical charge to sheltered terrain.

Unlike delivery vehicles, the press does not have information about the chemical weapon itself. And, there is no information about the availability of the North Korean chemical equipment in Syria or special electronic software.

Iran, in turn, also supplied Syria with delivery vehicles. This is a large number of short-range missiles, which also supplied to Hezbollah. They are ideal for short-range covert chemical attacks. In particular, it is Falagh2 with a range of up to 10 km, as well as missiles that belong to the Burkan model, which have a range of 2.5 km.

Specialized press calls them mortar “missile barrels”, because outwardly, this weapon seems very similar to anti-submarine deep-sea bombs. The use of these «missile barrels” against Syrian opposition was recorded in August 2013.

But again, all these missile deliveries to Syria or the nodal assembly of missiles on the spot apply only to the delivery vehicles of chemical weapons, not to WMD itself.

It means that Moscow has opportunity to point to Tehran or Pyongyang as the direct culprits.

But with the choice of those who, according to legend, gave Syria the opportunity to charge and produce chemical weapons, Moscow has a big problem. Because after the collapse of the USSR, which built factories in Syria to manufacture WMD, the post-Soviet successor is only RF, which, either from greed or from megalomania, did not consider it necessary to share with someone even a fraction of the succession.

What would have happened if Moscow had shared these rights with other republics of the Union? It would be the chance for Moscow to blame someone else.

For example, Kiev

For example, Kremlin could blame Kiev for supplying Syria with chemical weapons, as usual. It is possible that this role was prepared for Viktor Yanukovych in Moscow. But with this scenario something did not grow together, and various Russian information campaigns in 2013 looked very unconvincing.

So, in early January 2013, after accusations against the Syrian regime about the use of chemical weapons in Homs, the unnamed Russian military-diplomatic source of the Interfax agency reported that the countries interested in overthrowing the Assad regime are preparing a provocation against Russia in Syria. The purpose of the action is to compromise Russia as a mediator in the peace talks in Syria.

As this “unnamed” source told, special services of the West and the Middle East are recruiting men of Slavic appearance from Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus. They allegedly “have to play the role of Russian “mercenaries “who fought on the side of Assad and captured by the fighters of the so-called” Syrian Free Army”.  When enough men of Slavic appearance are recruited, they will be forced to tell on video that they were allegedly recruited by Russian special services and brought to Syria on warships for a specific purpose, explained the anonymous author.

This topic did not survive for two days and was forgotten. But at the end of January, the Russian marginal bloggers released a new sensation “How to prepare a provocation against Russia and Syria …”, which was quickly picked up by the leading Russian and Ukrainian media.

An unknown hacker “JasIrX” had hacked the mail box of the British private military corporation Britam Defense, which provided protection for oil companies in Iraq, and posted links to the archives of this company.

At the same time, the lightning analysis of the archives by “leading Russian analysts of the blogosphere” allowed them to uncover a “new world conspiracy” against Russia. In the opinion of the same “analysts”, the plot was planned by Great Britain and Qatar, but the most interesting is that they wanted to use the Ukrainian employees of Britam Defense.

Blitz-review of published documents was made by Russian blogger “ntv” on January 26, 2013. In the archives he found a letter with the theme “Sirian Issue” (“syrian” was written with an error).

In this letter, the British allegedly discussed a new proposal from Qatar. The aim was to deliver chemical weapons to Homs, namely Soviet gas bombs from Libya, the same ones that Assad should have. And only Ukrainian personnel who will speak Russian must be involved into it. Everything should be recorded on the video. And in the future, everything should look like the Syrian government used chemical weapons against militants and thereby unleash the hands of Assad’s opponents for military intervention in the country and discrediting Russia.

And as a result, Ukraine for several days was in the epicenter of another information provocation through “illegal activities of its citizens”, who were exposed as greedy and corrupt “Ukrainian mercenaries” ready for anything for the sake of hard currency in their hands.

Subsequently, the topic slowly died, and resurfaced under the skillful hand of the “invisible manipulator” again in May 2013 in the same Russian-speaking segment of the Internet after regular reports in the world press about the use of the chemical weapon by Syrian regime in Aleppo.

Thus, the article “How Britain prepares a provocation against Russia in Syria by the hands of Ukraine” was accompanied by the use of all the same January materials of the blogger “ntv”, which were issued for the latest and almost yesterday’s insider information, but with the addition of new resonant “facts”.

At the same time, the new headlines of articles and messages were transformed into more unpredictable and depressing messages for Ukraine: “Kiev will be accused in the supply of chemical weapons to Syria” and “Ukrainian mercenaries surpassed in cruelty fascists “.

The topic was actively promoted by the “Ukrainian intelligence officer”, then “commander of the Russian-Ukrainian Volunteer Corps against Islamists in Syria and Crimea” Sergei Razumovsky. According to him, Western countries in the near future can make claims to Ukraine, accusing it of delivering chemical weapons to Syria”.

But the most interesting is that this topic revived again in April 2017, namely, after the chemical attack of the Syrian regime in Khan Sheikhun in the province of Idlib and the US missile strike at the airfield Shayrat in Homs province, from which this chemical attack was conducted.

In the Russian propaganda media there were materials called: “The Daily Mail deleted an article about the US plan to organize a chemical attack in Syria.”

So, according to Russian propaganda resources, the British Daily Mail newspaper “removed” an article under the heading “The US supported the plan to carry out a chemical attack in Syria and blamed the Assad regime for this” from its website. It allegedly said “that the newspaper received from an unnamed Malaysian hacker a secret correspondence between two employees of British contractor Britam Defense, where a plan” approved by Washington “is being discussed, according to which Qatar will allocate funds for the acquisition of chemical weapons to fighters in Syria. However, the article notes that US President Barack Obama “will not tolerate if Bashar Assad uses chemical weapons against his people.”

In general, nothing new, only this time without “Ukrainian mercenaries”.

How did it all begin?

At first, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights brought Syria’s accusation on September 6 that its authorities, and not the Syrian opposition, hit the village Khan Sheikhun by chemical weapons in in the spring of this year.

It should be recalled that this tragedy is referred to as a chemical strike throughout the world, but only in Russian sources, it is strangely referred to as an “incident” with chemical weapons.  According to Russian side, its looks like annoying technical accident.

The day after this UN statement, on September 7, one of the most mysterious operations of the Israeli Air Force took place in the current Syrian war.

During this operation, Israeli Air Force allegedly destroyed the Syrian military chemical plant Al Tala in the area between the cities of Masjaf and Tartus. Some Middle Eastern media assured after the airstrike that there was a new assembly plant for Iranian Shahab missiles, which have a range of up to 1,000 km. Other media claimed that the chemical plant in Masjaf has recently been considered a backup site for the main military chemical center Jamray near Damascus.

What was the purpose of the Israel Air Forces attacks?

In total, the media has accounted at least 6 military chemical industries and more than 50 military chemical arsenals In Syria. Contrary to the civil war that is flaring in this state, its military chemical stores are not concentrated in the most reliable place.

This place is considered to be the same Masjaf, and also all the Mediterranean coast controlled by Bashar Assad, where the base of the Russian Navy is located.

Instead of this reliable territory, Syrian military warehouses for WMD are evenly dispersed throughout its area. More precisely, on the part that Russian and Syrian troops are holding under their control, as well as the pro-Iranian troops.

In this dispersal is a great strangeness, which completely corresponds to the above mentioned desire of the Russian Federation – by all means, to find a “scapegoat” among the Syrian opposition for the use of weapons of mass destruction, discovering the marvelously scattered warehouses and trucks, which are moving around it.

It is possible that the factory struck by the Israeli air strike in Masyafa was the central supply base for these warehouses. And the movement of trucks from there caused unconcealed irritation from Tel Aviv.

For the time being, Israel is frightened only by pro-Iranian Hezbollah, which has several types of missiles, suitable for the delivery of chemical weapons. And all these scattered warehouses will lead to the fact that soon someone else may become the same rocket-chemical bugbear. For example, the same “Islamic Caliphate”, whose units will suddenly take over, and find a few “missed” missiles or ammunition from the Syrian regime or Russian army, as it already was with military warehouses in Palmyra. Or simply, they will find barrels with the chemicals necessary for WMD manufacture and factory instructions.

Russia is very afraid of exposure and further confirmed accusations of covering the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian authorities, because it will threaten with new sanctions, which soon will not be anywhere to store.

And it will until the last time not allow the international community to receive an answer to the so-called last question, which will fully prove the role and place of Moscow in the “chemical outrage” of the Syrian regime against civilians.

Although many questions, already have answers for a long time – and not in favor of the Kremlin regime! Does Assad’s government have chemical weapons? Who defends the Assad regime? Who blocks the resolutions in the UN Security Council and delays the inspection of the Syrian facilities by the United Nations for the use of WMD? Which country was one of the main suppliers of defense products to Syria?
